Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS)

Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) is a HUD program designed to help public housing residents, Housing Choice Voucher participants, and residents of multifamily assisted housing to increase their earnings and build assets and financial capability.

The mission of the Family Self-Sufficiency Program (FSS Program) is to lead the way to opportunities through first rate Case Management for families to achieve new capabilities that lead to sustainable and permanent self sufficiency.

Who is eligible?

Any resident of Public Housing or Housing Choice Voucher Recipient who enrolls can be eligible for the FSS Program.

How does it work?

Once enrolled you will have a case manager who will assist you in accessing employment, educational, financial, and health resources.

What is escrow?

Escrow is a financial reward calculated by increases in the family income that results in increased rent. For example, if your rent increases by $200 because of wages or a business, you will automatically save $200 each time you pay rent!

Important to know...

The Department of Housing and Urban Development released the final rule, allowing individuals and families to use vouchers toward mortgage payments. The use of vouchers for homeownership will give many low-income individuals and families the opportunity to purchase their own homes.

Participants in the Housing Choice Homeownership Program may have their mortgage payments subsidized for a maximum term of 15 years on a mortgage loan of 20 years or more. Mortgage loans less than 20 years may be subsidized for a maximum term of 10 years. The maximum term limits for minimum income and employment do not apply for elderly or disabled families
